Year-round organic mealy potatoes from the Netherlands

Why import potatoes when local produce is also available? Thanks to variety development and improved storage techniques, the availability of Dutch potatoes can be extended further and further. “It takes energy, but it certainly pays off”

In the last week of June and the first weeks of July, the first fields with waxy, crumbly and slightly crumbly potatoes are harvested.
Frank Poelman, buyer at Landjuweel is very satisfied. “Together with a number of suppliers and growers, we have again focused on an early harvest from the Netherlands this year. Sometimes it’s exciting in the spring, but in the end the growing conditions were good and as a result there is already a nice fresh product in the shops at the beginning of July.

Our customers and consumers are increasingly seeing the importance of Dutch products.” This does not only concern the traditional early varieties Opperdoezer Ronde, Frieslanders and Doré, but rather the entire range of floury, slightly floury and organic potatoes. “Firm cooking types will be from Germany for another 3 to 4 weeks this year, but also that crop is already PlanetProof.” Poelman has good hopes of being able to supply this segment year-round from the Netherlands next year.
Landjuweel also packs organic potatoes from the Netherlands all year round. They have been doing this for the second year already, which fits in with the sustainable way of organic cultivation.

“"We remain critical about the quality and the stored lots are checked extra in spring." ”
Frank Poelman about storage

Thanks to better varieties and good storage techniques, the previous year’s harvest often remains good for a long time.
“We remain critical about the quality and the lots are checked extra in spring. It is always quite a puzzle to make a smooth transition to new harvest. The quality of the last lots was good because good choices were made. The harvesting conditions were also perfect, so we could start packing early with the mealy segment new harvest from the Netherlands.”

Dutch sweet potaoes
Landjuweel also relies on Dutch product for sweet potatoes. With grower Mts. Koenraadt-Heerink, they have been investing in the Dutch sweet potato for years. Landjuweel therefore sees a future for the cultivation and year-round availability of Dutch sweet potatoes. That makes a considerable difference in transport movements and therefore fits in well with the sustainability objectives of the hundred-year-old company.
